5 Fast Naming Tricks That’ll Help You Finally Name Your Business

5 Fast Naming Tricks That’ll Help You Finally Name Your Business

Let’s be real: naming your business is weirdly hard.

You want it to be clever—but not confusing.
Memorable—but not cringey.
Available—but not taken by a law firm in Michigan that hasn’t updated their website since 2009.

If you’re stuck, I’ve got you.

Here are 5 flexible naming strategies that’ll help you brainstorm smarter, decide faster, and actually like the name you pick.

But...Perfect is the Enemy of Done

Fun fact: You can always change your business name. But you probably won't have to. The truth?

Your business name matters way less than you think.

Unless your company's name is super complicated, very misleading, or just plain offensive (in any language!), it's really not going to move the needle for your business one way or the other. I promise.

And every minute you're spending trying to find the perfect name? That's one less minute you're actually driving your business forward.

So, don't let it stall you. Don't let it become an excuse to stop taking meaningful action.

Use these tips. Get it done. Move on.

5 Easy Ways to Name Your Business

1. Name the Transformation

What does your business do for people? Use the result as the name.
Example: Clear View Window Cleaning.

2. Name the Emotion

What should your buyer feel when they interact with your brand?
Example: Comfort Cookies.

3. Mash It Up

Blend two relevant words together to create something new.
Examples: Groupon (group + coupon), Netflix (net + flicks)

4. Use Your Own Name

It may not be flashy, but it works—especially in service businesses.
Pro TIp:
Add “& Co.” or “Studio” or “Collective” if it feels too plain.

5. Use a Name Generator

AI tools like Canva, Logo.com, Wix, and Shopify offer great free tools that’ll spark ideas instantly.
Pro Tip:
Don't forget to check if the URL or name is being used by another business.

Final Thought
You don’t need the perfect name.

You need a clear one.

One you can say out loud without cringing. One that makes it easier for people to remember, refer, and trust you.

Let’s go find yours.

Naming your business should not be the thing that stops you from starting your business. But for so many solopreneurs, it's like running into a brick wall made of blank whiteboards and spoiler alert. I might have been one of them once upon a time, but not anymore. If you're stuck in name limbo, I've got you. I'm sharing five fast proven ways to create a business name that's clear and creative and actually gets you moving.

Hi, I'm Melisa. I'm a B2B marketing strategist that's worked with big companies like Microsoft, meta, and Amazon. But now I help entrepreneurs and small businesses get super clear on their messaging, their strategy, and their marketing so they can stop spending their wheels and start growing. Today we are fixing your business name Brain Fog immediately. Let's go. So before we get into these tips, I'm going to tell you a quick little story and that's that.

I myself have procrastinated starting a business because I couldn't pick the perfect name. Or at least I thought I didn't have the perfect name. And I am here to tell you that that is just so foolish. I wish I could go back and tell my for myself that your business name outside of like some really, really bad ones.

That doesn't matter as much as you think it does. What matters is getting your business started and moving. I mean, I was definitely the person that had a huge spreadsheet of all kinds of different business name options, different permutations of business names, so that I could rank them and score them and try and understand why, you know, talking to friends about them, whether or not it was going to be a successful business name or not.

Total waste of time. Truly, unless your business name is super complicated, very misleading, or just plain offensive, it's really not going to move the needle for your business one way or the other. So naming your business less important than you think it is starting quickly, way more important than you think it is. All right, let's get on to our first trick.

Name your business after the transformation you deliver. Now, I've talked about transformational messaging in a previous video, which I'll link up here somewhere. But looking into a transformation is all about your clients before and after. So what happens when someone uses your product or service? How are they better off? Let's say you clean windows. You could call yourself clear view window cleaning.

It's simple, it's outcome driven, and it's super easy to understand. This type of name builds immediate trust because it focuses on what your customer gets, not on what you do. Tip number two go with a feeling. Ask yourself what emotion do your customers experience when they interact with your brand? It could be comfort, joy, relief, confidence, pride, whatever best fits your product.

For example, let's take the title Comfort Cookies. It's not just about baked goods, it's about nostalgia. It's about warmth and a moment of peace. You're selling the vibe, not the ingredients. This works especially well for businesses that are about experiences, care, or lifestyle. Tip number three this one's kind of fun. I like to call it the mashup. What you do is take two core words and combine them into something new, like a celebrity couple name.

Think like Groupon Group plus coupon or Netflix internet plus flicks. These kinds of names land as clever and innovative, and the bonus is that because it's not a real word, then it becomes easier to find the domain name or, you know, get a trademark for them. If you're in a super crowded industry, this can be a great way to stand out without having a name that feels totally random.

Tip number four. This one is old school and super fast. You use your own name, a name like Jay Smith and Company or the Morgan Group that might not win a whole bunch of points for creativity. But if you're in a trust based business like consulting or legal or accounting, this kind of name creates a sense of stability and professionalism right out of the gate.

And if you're feeling a little stuck right now, this is an excellent placeholder. While you refine your brand. A name can always be changed, and there is no shame in a simple start. Tip number five. My last tip is to let AI do the heavy lifting. There are some seriously helpful tools out there that will generate a list of names.

Dozens of names with just a short description of what you're trying to do. My current favorite tools as of the recording of this video are Canva, Shopify, Wix, and GoDaddy arrow Tool. These are all free tools that are super easy to use, and all you have to do is drop in a phrase like creative name for a B2B consulting firm.

Hit enter and boom, you've got options. And here's a little bonus side tip for those of you who made it this far in the video. Thank you for saying it might seem super obvious, but just in case, I have to remind you to please Google that business name. In fact, when you're going through this process, it's probably a good idea to come up with a short list of 3 to 5 business names that you'd be happy to use.

The reason that you want to Google it is, of course, to make sure that no one else is using it, particularly not using it in a business that is similar to your own. Doing something like that just equals lawsuits and a whole lot of headache. But it also does another thing, and that's to make sure that whatever name you decide upon is not offensive in another language.

This especially applies to those words that might not appear in an English dictionary, like our mashup technique. Right? You want to make sure that you're not offending anyone with the name of your business. And yes, that does happen. So while it might seem a little bit obvious, please be sure to just take that five minutes and Google the name that you like the best to make sure it's not going to cause you problems in the future.

If you're not a note taker, no big deal. I have bundled all of these tips into a very easy printable, or save a PDF that you can use while you're brainstorming. It's called five Ways to Name a Business Fast, and you can grab it for free in a link in the description below. It is great to use when you're naming a business or a product or a side hustle.

It's a way to make sure that you're hitting this step in your business building journey fast and walking away with something you can actually use. So you have all these tips ready to go, right? And now I want you to make a promise to yourself that you are not going to let this day close without choosing a business name.

Because like I said, the most important thing that you can do for your business is start selling. It is not wasting time coming up with the perfect business name.
